Vineyards in Russian River Valley in Spring, Sonoma County

Russian River to the Coast Scenic Drive

This first scenic drive for amazing photos starts out in Guerneville and takes Highway 116 west to the Coast. As a result, you get beautiful views of the Russian River and a very noticeable change in environment as you approach the River’s mouth. You have two options when you reach Highway 1, which runs north-south along the coastline. The first option is to head north into the little town of Jenner. The second option is to head south to Goat Rock beach or farther down to the town of Bodega Bay.

Jenner to Fort Ross State Historic Park Scenic Drive

Next, you’ll want to drive one of the most scenic coastal routes in the world – Jenner to Fort Ross. You’ll see that Fort Ross is surrounded by sandy beaches, panoramic coves, redwood forests, and breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. From 1812 to 1841, the Fort Ross State Historic Park was the hub of the southernmost Russian settlements along the West Coast. Today the 3,400 acre park offers pristine natural landscapes, historic structures and exhibits.  Be sure to stop at Fort Ross Vineyard and Tasting Room. They pour Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinotage made from grapes grown exclusively in the winery’s vineyard. Fun fact – they are closer to the Pacific Ocean than any other vineyard in California!
